During the third trimester, expecting mothers might undergo certain ultrasound examinations, including growth scans. These are simple, non-invasive tests used to check a fetus’ growth and development.

What Are Growth Scans?

A growth scan is a routine ultrasonic scan performed during pregnancy. It is one of several types of ultrasound tests offered by our team of expert maternal-fetal health specialists. Growth scans are used to check the fetal weight as well as position and movement. The location of the placenta and the level of amniotic fluid around the fetus will also be assessed during the scan.

What to Expect During a Growth Scan

Growth scans take approximately 15-30 minutes and are performed similarly to other ultrasound examinations. Your sonographer will ask you to lie down, and gel will be applied over your abdomen. Using an ultrasound transducer (probe), several measurements will be taken, including:

  • Biparietal diameter: the diameter of the baby’s head
  • Head circumference: length around the baby’s head
  • Abdominal circumference: length around the baby’s abdomen
  • Length of the femur (thigh bone)

The ultrasound will also document the placenta’s location and the level of amniotic fluid around the baby. If several growth scans are performed in the third trimester, each new result will be compared to previous scans to check the baby’s progress.

How Are Growth Scan Results Used?

Growth scan measurements are used to assess fetal growth across pregnancy. If there is a concern over fetal growth on the ultrasound, additional tests may be performed, including a biophysical profile or Doppler studies of the umbilical artery.
